It’s easy to set goals, but it’s the work towards them that is difficult. It requires continuous commitment and work.

Maria Tabaka, contributor to Inc. offers some tips to help you achieve your goals.

Make Your Goals Achievable

Find a challenge, something that compels you and is attainable. “Brilliant minds need a challenge; otherwise boredom will set in and your plan will fall to the wayside,” says Tabaka. She suggests you put your goal in writing.

Make a List of Positives

Ask yourself what positive outcomes will happen. Look for things that excite you and give you something to look forward to.

Share Your Vision

Share your vision with your team to help them connect with company goals as well.

Have Patience

Goals won’t be achieved overnight; it’s the work towards them that is difficult.

Get Specific

We often make a broad declaration about what we want to accomplish, such as, “I want to grow my business.” These are vague, intangible and are hardly ever accomplished.

To achieve goals, make them specific. What exactly is it you want? How much do you want to grow your business by and how will you get it done?

Break it Down

Break down your overall goal into small ones. It will make them seem more achievable, but you still have specific things to aim for along the way. Write down, step-by-step, what you want to achieve and how you can get there.

Take Action

There is not better time to start working on your goals as the present. Don’t put them off for a better time in the future. This better time may never come. Start now!

The secret to goal attainment is once you set, start doing the work. Take action and stop the procrastination. Time is our most valuable asset. If we waste it, we can never get it back.

We also reward people for short-term goals such as increasing sales two percent each month or to fix a piece of equipment, and they’ve come to expect these rewards immediately.

However, this short term goal achievement is inconsistent with the notion of an important leadership trait: Persistence.

To quote Calvin Coolidge, “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. How to Develop and Perfect Persistence

Know the road ahead is long. While immediate, short-term fixes help, they are part of a longer journey, not short cuts to the end goal.

Be honest with yourself about what you want, and what you can realistically achieve.

Define your goal and identify the steps needed to be successful.

Take one step at a time. Persistence is the ability to move forward at a consistent pace, while being open to adjustments. You may have a plan, but uncertainties and obstacles may necessitate shifts in order to succeed.

Pace yourself. This isn’t a race to the finish line, and you can’t do everything all at once. You will burn yourself out.

Keep going and sustain the momentum so your efforts don’t stall. When you feel your determination begin to wane, remind yourself why you wanted to accomplish your goal in the first place.

To have success, leaders need to develop, and perfect, persistence and determination.

Back in 1995, Steve Jobs said, “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”

A true leader won’t throw in the towel, even when faced with adversity.
